The Murdered Butler
Riddle: The wealthy Smith family hosted a dinner party. During the party, the butler was murdered. The detective arrived and interviewed the family members and guests:
Mr. Smith: “I was in the library reading a book.”
Mrs. Smith: “I was in the kitchen preparing dinner.”
The gardener: “I was planting seeds in the garden.”
The maid: “I was setting the table.”

Answer: The maid is the murderer. There is no need to set the table during a dinner party since it’s already set.
Two Doors and Two Guards
You find yourself in a room with two doors. There are two guards, one in front of each door. One guard always tells the truth, and the other always lies, but you don’t know which is which. You can ask one guard one question to determine which door leads to safety. What question do you ask?
Answer: You ask either guard, “If I were to ask the other guard which door leads to safety, what would he say?” Then, choose the opposite door of what the guard indicates. For example, if the truthful guard says the lying guard would point to the left door, go through the right door.
The Scientist
A famous scientist was found dead one morning in his lab. He was slumped over his desk with a gun in his hand. There was a cassette recorder on the desk, and when the police pressed play, they heard the scientist’s voice saying, “I can’t take it anymore,” followed by a gunshot. The police ruled it as a suicide. However, a detective on the case didn’t believe it and immediately knew it was a murder. How did he know?
Answer: If the scientist shot himself while saying, “I can’t take it anymore,” he wouldn’t have been able to press the stop button on the recorder. Someone else must have been present to stop and rewind the tape.

A murderer is condemned to death. He has to choose between three rooms. The first is full of raging fires, the second is full of assassins with loaded guns, and the third is full of lions that haven’t eaten in 3 years. Which room should the condemned man choose to give him the best chance to survive?
Answer: The room with the lions. They must be dead if they have not eaten in three years.
Three Light Bulbs
There are three light bulbs in a room. Outside of the room there are three switches. You can not see the light bulbs from outside the room. Each switch is connected to only one of the bulbs. You can only enter the room once. How can you determine which switch is connected to each bulb?
Answer: Turn on one switch for a few minutes and then turn it off. Turn on another switch, and then enter the room. The bulb that is on corresponds to the second switch. The bulb that is off and still warm corresponds to the first switch, and the bulb that is off and cool corresponds to the third switch.
Poisoned drinks
Steve and Mary went out for drinks together. They ordered the same drink. Steve was really thirsty and finished five drinks in the time it took Mary to finish one. The drinks were poisoned, but only Mary died. How come?
Answer: The ice in the drinks was poisened. Steve drank so fast his ice did not have time to melt.
The Funeral
A woman named Carol was at the funeral of her father. She met a nice young man at the funeral that she had never seen before. After the service, they spent a some time together and they really hit it off. Unfortunately she did no get his name or phone number before he left. She tried to find him, but no one knew who he was or how to contact him. A few weeks later, Carol’s older sister dies and the police suspect murder. Who killed the sister?
Answer: Carol killed her sister. With no way to contact the young man she hoped he would show up at her sister’s funeral.
Thief on Board
A Japanese fishing vessel was about to leave port and on its way to the sea. The captain went to go oil some parts of the ship and took his ring off so it wouldn’t get damaged. He left it on the table next to his bunk. When he returned, it was missing. He had suspected three crew members could be guilty and asked them what they had been doing for the ten minutes that he had been gone.
The cook said, “I was in the kitchen preparing tonight’s dinner.”
The engineer said, “I was working in the engine room making sure everything was running smoothly.”
The seaman said, “I was on the mast fixing the flag because someone had raised it upside down by mistake.”
Immediately the captian knew who it was. How?
